May Is Road Safety Month

SCTEX Joining Safety Campaign

May has been declared Road Safety Month. But for the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), owner and  builder of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), road safety is a year-round priority.

The country’s longest tollway at nearly 94 kilometers long, SCTEX is one of the major highways participating in the road safety consciousness campaign that the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) is staging this May.

SCTEX has speed tracking radars that monitor all vehicles on the tollway. It also has lane management teams strategically stationed along the expressway, barriers and toll plazas. According to Robert Gervacio, SCTEX program manager and spokesperson, the strict implementation of proper speed limits is one of the key factors that make SCTEX safe for motorists.

“We are happy to note that drivers who travel our highway are very conscious of observing the appropriate speed limits,” he said. “This helps avert tragic vehicular accidents.”

BCDA’s strict implementation of speed limits, which includes the apprehension of and issuance of citations against erring SCTEX users, has encouraged motorists to toe the line. “Our strictness in observing speed limits is basically for the safety of our highway users,” Gervacio noted.

To assist motorists driving at night, SCTEX has reflectorized traffic cones,  retroreflective raised pavement markers (RPMs) or “cat’s eyes”, road signs, and plastic jersey barriers.

Gervacio added that security teams are strategically deployed along the tollway to make sure that help is just 20 minutes away from any point along the SCTEX. Motorists needing roadside assistance can call the following SCTEX hotlines (0920) 96-SCTEX (72839), (045) 865-2030, (02) 362-9997 and (02) 362-2246
