SCTEX steps up greening program

The greening program of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) continues to gain ground with more volunteers from various sectors joining the weekly tree-planting activities.

“At the rate we are going, it is very likely that we can overshoot the target 25,000 trees planted in five years,” said the Bases Conversion and Development Authority’s (BCDA) SCTEX spokesperson Robert Gervacio.

Mr. Gervacio said they have already planted more than 5,000 saplings of at least five native tree species—Narra, Ilang-ilang, Banaba, Molave, Cupang and Bitaog—since the program was launched shortly after the SCTEX commenced full commercial operations in July last year.

He  said they have intensified their greening activities with the prevailing rainy season to ensure higher percentage of survival for the young trees.

Covered so far by the program were the  two SCTEX interchanges in Clark Freeport Zone namely: Clark North and Clark South,  the Mabalacat Interchange and certain stretches of the road side towards Tarlac.

The SCTEX has to procure saplings from nearby nurseries to supplement the production of its own nursery in Clark to cope with the stepped up planting activities.

Gervacio also said certain non-government organizations and other groups in Central Luzon are expected to participate in the greening events in keeping with their commitment to help preserve the ecosystem.

The greening program will further enhance the natural attraction of the 93.7-kilometer SCTEX which is already known for its seemingly interminable scenic beauty on both sides of the road.
